HBHE welcomes new Director of Internships and Alumni Relations

I am pleased to announce that Kiran Szekeres, MPH,will be our new Director of Internships and Alumni Relations beginning in January as Nancy Willard relocates to California with her family.  We appreciate all of the time, energy, and creativity that Nancy has invested in the HBHE student experience.  She truly has made a lasting and positive impact, particularly with the internship process and our professional development courses.  We wish her all the best with her move. She will be greatly missed!

Kiran is a 2007 graduate of Northwestern University’s anthropology program, and a 2009 graduate of our MPH program.  She completed her internship with the Will County Health Department where she led a community education initiative to prevent childhood lead poisoning during ‘DIY’ home renovations.  While a student, she was an active volunteer with Project Health Schools, a school-based program to reduce childhood obesity and its long-term health risks.

After working in healthcare policy for a spell, it became clear that I wanted to pursue a career in public health, specifically in health equity. I was lucky to be hired as an Asthma Educator at IMPACT DC, an asthma clinic in Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC that equips families and children with the resources and support to manage their children’s asthma. I was looking forward to working for my boss, Caitlin, who had her MPH from University of Michigan, a program to which I had wanted to apply. Little did I know, I would end up following in her footsteps.

Graduation is not Goodbye

Black robes and salmon hoods are a familiar scene at SPH every May, but as each HBHE student knows, moving that tassel does not indicate graduation from a community, rather it is confirming a connection. We start building our HBHE relationships from the beginning, and those friendships, mentorships, and other relationships will stay with us much longer than the length of any academic program.

Get to Know the Chair: Dr. Cathleen Connell

Dr. Cathleen Connell has been a faculty member of HBHE since January 1989. This January 2014 she began her tenure as HBHE’s Chair. She’s from Southeastern Pennsylvania and her favorite public health theory is Social Cognitive Theory. Why? Because she’s a fan of self-efficacy and its importance to accomplishing goals. Keep reading to get to know a little bit about the woman behind the Chair.
