Dr. Patel received her MPH and Ph.D in the Department of
Health Behavior & Health Education at the University of Michigan.
Dr.
Patel's research focuses on relationships necessary to enhance management of
chronic disease. These relationships include those between individuals with a
chronic condition and their family members, peers, and individual health care
providers (e.g. clinicians, informal caregivers, community health workers).
She
has particular interest in how health care systems and community organizations
can develop their capacity to foster effective disease management by
individuals and families. Much of her research examines interventions that aim
to improve chronic disease outcomes through strengthening these relationships
and increasing support for self-management.
In her most recent work, Dr. Patel completed
a study funded by the American Lung Association, examining patient's
perceptions of financial burden associated with management of asthma and their
impact on physician-patient relationships and satisfaction with care. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, working out, and
exploring new places.
