A Changing of the Guard: Honoring Marc Zimmerman

Did you know Marc Zimmerman has held the position of HBHE Chair longer than any other Chair in U-M HBHE's past? If you graduated in the last decade, he was likely your Chair.

Effective January 1, Marc will step down and we are thrilled to welcome Cathleen Connell to the role of HBHE Chair.

5 Tips for Self-care and Work-life Balance, From HBHE Alumni

1. Take time for yourself
Do things for yourself whether it’s taking up interests outside of work or having fun weekends!

Have fun on your weekends and don't schedule meetings for Monday morning if you can help it!” – Lillian Madrigal (’13)

“My tip for young professionals, especially those who don't have children and are often (implicitly or explicitly) expected to stay late because they don't have children, is to sign up for art, meditation, or exercise classes right after regular work hours. That way, not only are you taking care of yourself, but you can say "sorry, I can't stay late tonight, I've got a class." – Emily Renda (’09)

Catch up with the Research Centers of HBHE, Part 1:

There are many Centers associated with HBHE and its faculty, and it is safe to say there is a lot of exciting, innovative, and important work going on to improve health and make communities healthier. Whether you worked with one of these Centers at HBHE or they are new to you, here’s a brief introduction to four of them:
  • Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture, and Health (CRECH)
  • Prevention Research Center of Michigan (PRC/MI)
  • Center for Sexuality & Health Disparities (SexLab)
  • Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (Detroit URC)

The Art of Compassionate Leadership: MPH Student Thanks Leseliey Rose Welch, HBHE Alum

Leseliey Rose Welch, MPH, MBA
About a month ago I found myself sitting at an enormous table, surrounded by stakeholders from every major LGBT and HIV advocacy organization in Southeast Michigan, co-facilitating what felt like one of the most important meetings of my life. The meeting’s purpose was to discuss the need and possibilities for creating a LGBT health center in the Detroit Metro Area. In front of every person at the table laid a copy of a policy brief that I authored, which highlighted the need for LGBT-centered health care in Detroit.
