5 Tips for Self-care and Work-life Balance, From HBHE Alumni

1. Take time for yourself
Do things for yourself whether it’s taking up interests outside of work or having fun weekends!

Have fun on your weekends and don't schedule meetings for Monday morning if you can help it!” – Lillian Madrigal (’13)

“My tip for young professionals, especially those who don't have children and are often (implicitly or explicitly) expected to stay late because they don't have children, is to sign up for art, meditation, or exercise classes right after regular work hours. That way, not only are you taking care of yourself, but you can say "sorry, I can't stay late tonight, I've got a class." – Emily Renda (’09)

2. Leave work at work
You’ve graduated from HBHE so leave that homework behind! This way you can be sure to make time for your family and other loved ones.

Family is the most important thing.  Block off time for the little things and when the day ends, leave it at work. It’s a conscience decision.” – Jeff Holzhausen (‘98)

“Set boundaries for your self, don't send emails after you leave work if you don't want that to be a normal thing, because once you start doing it that's what people will expect of you!” – Lillian Madrigal (’13)

3. Get out of your own headspace
Whether this means jamming out to a Meatloaf power ballad or taking the time to breathe a little deeper through meditation, sometimes it can help to get lost in something else.

“Never underestimate the power of Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band to take the edge off a tough day.” – Jeff Holzhausen (’98)

“Also, I have found meditation for stress reduction to be very beneficial.” – Emily Renda (’09)

4. Make a plan
Whether that means planning out your week in advance, making time to work out or making lunch plans, sometimes providing a little structure can ensure we get to make time for the things that matter—like having a social life!

After several months of working full time, I'm learning that finding balance is much easier said than done. I've found personally that planning my week out in advance with my exercise and social life allows me to be fulfilled both physically and mentally. If I write it down, I am making a personal agreement with myself that I am going to do it.” – Lauren Johnson (’13)

“Schedule your day around your workout! That way it's a priority and you'll actually do it!” – Lillian Madrigal (’13)

5. Be flexible
Sometimes, despite the best of plans, things can go…awry. Just remember to take a deep breath, take a break, and don’t get too down on yourself because you are wonderful.

“Just remember to be flexible, and don't get too down on yourself when everything doesn't go as planned." – Lauren Johnson (’13)

Take advantage of your commute time.  Use it to unwind and use it for your you-time” – Jeff Holzhausen (’98)

Take a break for lunch. Go outside. It makes a world of difference.” – Lillian Madrigal (’13)
