Faculty Transitions: Introducing Dr. John Piette

John D. Piette, Ph.D

John D. Piette, Ph.D, has recently joined HBHE as a new faculty member.  Please join us in welcoming him to the HBHE family.

Dr. Piette is coming to HBHE from the UM Medical School, where he has been a professor since 1991.  He will maintain a secondary appointment in Internal Medicine. Dr. Piette also is a Senior VA Research Career Scientist and Associate Director for Mobile Health in the UM Global REACH Program.

Dr. Piette is a global leader in care management innovation and has been the principal investigator for several NIH-sponsored trials evaluating new strategies for patient self-care improvement through the use of advanced between-visit mobile health technologies. His research has aimed to improve both the quality and accessibility of chronic disease care with an emphasis on self-management support and telemedicine for vulnerable populations.

In addition to mobile health, Dr. PIette has written extensively about medication adherence problems, emphasizing the health beliefs and other modifying co-factors that influence patients' adherence decisions when facing out-of-pocket cost pressures.  Dr. Piette is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings, focusing on patient-centered health technology, health literacy, and complex chronic disease management for patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental illness, and chronic pain. Most of Dr. Piette's international research is in Latin America. Over the next several years he will be leading teaching and research projects in Bolivia that include SPH students.
